Maintaining a Professional Image on the Internet

These days, most people first meet each other online, or at least this happens in a whole lot more situations than it used to happen. It’s important to remember though that when you’re working on this your physical appearance might still matter. It’s the whole package that matters even on the Internet.

Image Online

One thing you can do online involves creating your personal brand through appearance. Because of sites like Facebook, this is more possible than it might initially sound. You can upload images of yourself on Facebook, for example. But it’s important that you choose what images you add to Facebook carefully if you leave it open to the public. You can be sure that employers will check your Facebook profile when they are deciding whether you are a suitable employee. This is a fairly common practice now. As a result, it’s important to make sure that you only upload images that make you look professional on your Facebook page. If you let more of yourself be viewable online than you might like, employers will tend to read into it.

Maintaining Social Media

There are so many different social media sites these days that you can’t generally get away with only using one or two sites. Although, it is true that some sites are more important than others in the business world. For example, LinkedIn is a site that lends itself well to those working on their professional image online. The entire point of the site is to put forth a professional image, including literally in the form of pictures, but also figuratively in the form of various answers to questions about you’re professional life. The ability to connect to people and list professional liaisons can go a long way to helping your online professional image. If you can prove connections to people who have a very public and famous rating on the Internet, then this will create certain ideas and connections in the minds of people who are looking at it. Additionally, it also helps to create your brand through the use of Twitter, Google+ and other such sites as well. People will often go from one site to another checking your credentials and looking for any available information about you.

Maintaining an online image can be difficult but it is ultimately worth it.
